comprehensive exam
At every examination (initial and followup) the same process is followed:
- A detailed discussion of all your concerns and goals
- Discussion of previous dental experiences; what worked and didn’t for you (initial exam only)
- Examination of all the soft tissues of the mouth: cheeks, lips, tongue, roof and floor of the mouth, throat, including screening for oral cancer and any signs of pathology, cysts, tumours etc.
- Drying every surface of each tooth and inspecting it, looking at the integrity of the teeth and existing fillings, vitality of the teeth, cracks, wear, quality of the enamel, position in the mouth etc
- A periodontal screening exam and assessment of the gums
- Assessment of your saliva, bite, jaw joints (TMJ) and jaw muscles.
- Screen for bruxism (grinding and clenching)
- Screening for snorning and sleep apnoea
- If applicable, a smile analysis: symmetry, smile line and other aesthetic measures
- Discussion of all findings with any questions.
- Discussion of all available treatment options including pros, cons, costs and logistics of each.
- The formulation of a proposed individual treatment plan or several different plans detailing different
options. - Mutual discussion on how to stage the treatment so it suits your schedule and situation. The cost of this extended assessment is the same as a standard exam; I prefer to take the time to do things properly; proactive is so much better than reactive!
